Who Are We?
BSA Troop 1776 and Ship 1776 San Ramon, CA. Established April 6th, 2000
It’s no coincidence that we chose the year of our country’s founding as our identifying Scout unit numbers. Troop 1776 & Ship 1776 are patriotic Scouting organizations that work to promote citizenship and the principles our country was founded on. The troop has grown steadily since its inception, with just 5 Scouts. Our boys love to have fun and today the troop ranges between 27-33 active Scouts.
Ship 1776 is a Venture Scouting organization (Sea Scouts) that is unique to the San Ramon Valley.
Troop 1776 meets on Fridays from 7 pm to 8:30pm. This night was chosen to minimize weeknight homework demands. Our meeting locations vary. During the fall and spring we are at Church of the Valley, 19001 San Ramon Valley Blvd, San Ramon. In summer months we split our meetings between the church and the San Ramon Olympic Pool. Many Friday's we are able to combine a camping trip with our meetings and are off on an outing. Our website has our calendar, but it is restricted to members only for privacy. Please email us if you plan to visit.
Dues are $35 for the first quarter (which includes the neckerchief) and $100 per year thereafter. We feel our troop is large enough to offer each scout both a wide variety of activities and several leadership opportunities, yet small enough to provide individual attention. We encourage dads and moms to become troop leaders, volunteers, merit badge counselors, committee members, and to support formal Boards of Review. Troop 1776’s Scoutmaster, Dave Hagebush is Wood Badge trained and an Eagle Scout.
We are proud to have awarded 10 young men the rank of Eagle Scout. The Troop often has more than one outing a month and the Sea Scouts average about 1 event per month with more activities occurring in the summer months. We camp 15-20 nights per year including summer camp and we backpack a couple of times a year. We are often found hiking. We typically hike about 8-12 times a year and are preparing to complete our fourth Fages II (22 miles) in as many years. We encourage Scouts to participate in as many activities as they can but are realistic about other time commitments. We encourage each campout to have a theme like; Role-Playing Game, RPG, Freeze your tail off and Chill Campouts and boys are free to suggest other themes which are then voted on in the Patrol Leaders Council. Our troop actively participates in a wide array of Scout events and our levels of participation is often very high.
For Sea Scouts (young men and women between the ages of 14-20), we offer multi-day sailing cruises, sailboat racing, safety training, pistol marksmanship and social activities oriented toward high-school and college students onboard the SSS showbiz, a 33 foot yacht. The seafaring activities of Ship1776 are unmatched by any of the other local troops. With the America's Cup coming up, this will create some wonderful opportunities to be sailing on the San Francisco Bay as well as some great learning opportunities to see what the best of sailing has to offer.
